Why Shipping Container Shelving?

Shipping containers provide a versatile storage option, but without proper shelving, they can quickly become cluttered. The benefits of using shelving to efficiently organise your container storage include:

  • Maximum Space Utilisation - Vertical storage frees up valuable floor space. So you can store more items without the container feeling cramped.

  • It's Easy to Find What You Need - Shelving helps you categorize and store items logically. So you always know where everything is.

  • Safety - Storing items on shelves prevents them from being stacked haphazardly on the floor. So the risk of accidents is reduced.

  • Improved Productivity - An organized space means you can access your materials or products quickly. So you save time and and effort.

Shelving Options

Selecting the right shelving system depends on the items you need to store, the weight capacity required, and how you will use the container. As a guide, here are some popular shelving systems for shipping containers. You can click on the images below to shop our range of container shelving.

Freestanding Shelving Units

Freestanding shelving is an ideal solution if you want flexibility in your storage (see image 2 below). These units are easy to install, move, and rearrange as your needs change. Made from materials like steel or heavy-duty plastic, they can handle a wide range of items. Their advantages include:

  • No need to drill into the container walls

If you need to store bulky or heavy items, then heavy-duty shelving systems are essential. Our heavy duty longspan shelves (see image 3 below) are made from reinforced steel and can hold significant weight. So they are perfect for industrial and heavy equipment storage. They are sold with 4 shelf levels or tiers as standard. However, you can request 2, 5 or as many as you need.

Wall-Mounted Bracket Shelving

Wall-mounted shelving is attached directly to the shipping container’s walls. So you can maximize the use of vertical space without taking up floor room. As a result, they are perfect for smaller or lighter items that need to be easily accessible. Their advantages include:

  • Save on floor space

  • Ideal for frequently used items

  • Customizable height and arrangement

Wire Shelving

Wire shelving is a versatile, lightweight option that’s perfect for items that require ventilation, such as electronics or perishables. In addition, wire shelves provide good airflow and are often rust-resistant. So they are ideal for containers stored in outdoor weather conditions. Their advantages include:

  • Enhanced airflow

  • Lightweight and adjustable

  • Easy to clean and maintain

How to Choose the Best Shelving for Your Shipping Container

Set out below are some of the key factors to consider, when deciding on the best shipping container shelving for your specific needs:

Purpose of Your Shipping Container

Are you using the container to store equipment or tyres or as a workshop? Knowing the purpose of the container will help you choose the right shelving system. For example, if you need to store heavy equipment, then opt for heavy-duty shelving. Alternatively, if you need to display products, then consider wall-mounted or freestanding units.

Weight Capacity

Make sure the shelving system you choose can handle the required load to avoid bending or collapsing shelves. Heavy-duty or industrial-grade shelves are the best choice for heavier items.

Ease of Installation

If you plan to frequently adjust your shelving setup, then opt for systems that are easy to install and move. Freestanding and boltless shelving systems are great for flexibility, while wall-mounted shelves offer a more permanent solution.

Durability

If your container is exposed to the elements, then choose shelving systems that are rust-resistant or made from durable materials like galvanized or powder coated steel. This will ensure your shelving lasts and remains functional even in harsh conditions.

Benefits of Quality Shipping Container Shelving

Choosing to use quality shipping container shelving is an investment in efficiency and safety. It will provide:

  • Long-Term Durability - High-quality shelving systems are built to last. So you save money on replacements or repairs.

  • Improved Productivity - A well-organized space makes it easier to find what you need. So you can work more efficiently.

  • Increased Safety - Sturdy shelving systems keep items secure and organized. So the risk of accidents is reduced.

Installing Shipping Container Shelving

Set out below is a simple stepwise approach to installation that will help make it a manageable project.

Plan the Layout

Measure your container and decide the best place for the shelves. Factor in the height and width of your items to ensure everything will fit.

We provide a free drawing service to help you plan the most efficient layout of your storage space. As an example, we helped a client, who was fitting out a container with some tyre racking to create more storage space for their business (see image 5 below).

Tyre racking

From the initial plan there were a couple of iterations of changes, as we went back and forth with discussions and ideas about the best means of storing tyres on the available floor space. As a result we included a number of positive changes in the size, position and choice of each starter and add on racking bay. Following these iterations, the client settled on the plan below for their storage container (container 1 image below).

Assemble the Shelves

If you’re using our heavy duty shelving, then it's simply a matter of slotting the various components into place (no need for any tools). For wall-mounted shelves, install the brackets securely into the container walls.

Position and Secure the Shelves

Place the shelves in their designated positions, ensuring they are level and stable. Secure heavy duty shelves to the floor of the container to prevent any movement during transit or heavy use.

Organise Your Items

Once the shelving has been installed, you can organise your items in a systematic way that suits your requirements. Consider placing heavier items on lower shelves and frequently accessed items at eye level for easy access.

Conclusion

Shipping container shelving transforms your container into a versatile, organized space. Whether you’re using your container for personal storage, business inventory, or as a workspace, the right shelving solution can make a world of difference.
